Remembering Boulder Creek’s Barry Tanner

Boulder Creek has lost one of its most treasured and beloved community members. Barry Tanner has passed away.

Son Kyli writes, “A musician, a builder, an organizer, a teacher, a lover, a fighter, a friend… he fought cancer longer than anyone thought he could and I am grateful for every minute I got to spend with him.”

In an interview with Julie Horner a few years ago, Barry said, “Go-to people pop up, they’re going to make it happen. There are people in this community who have that gift.” Barry Tanner had the gift of go-to.

A few years ago, Barry was told he would only be alive for another year. At that time he said that he wasn’t going to waste a minute. “I’m going to go to festivals…I’ve got to get my tickets to Kate Wolf…I’ve got an air mattress that fits perfectly in the back of my van, my folding chairs…”

Entertainment writer, Michele Murphy, just spent time with Barry in November and wrote this article for the Post: slvpost.com/the-door-is-always-open

Michele writes, “From booking bands, to providing equipment and sound tech services, to recording and producing music in studio, Barry Tanner has done pretty much every job you can do in the music industry. And his band, Badenov, played out up until about a year ago when his continuing fight with cancer made it impossible to perform. But that hasn’t stopped him from enjoying an occasional jam in the studio, and you can still often hear music wafting up Pine Street on a sunny afternoon.”
